STURGIS – Pierre Governor Soccer teams continued their excellent starts in Sturgis Thursday at Woodle Field. The fourth-ranked Governor girls improved to 4-0 with a 5-0 win over the Scoopers. Then, the Pierre boys stopped Sturgis 7-2 for a 3-1 start to the season.
Elli Hughes scored twice for the Governor girls, tallying in the 34th minute, then again in the 77th minute off a Kyanne Beck cross. Avery Davis scored in the 46th minute off a Scooper turnover, Ryann Barry blasted one in from the top of the box in the 55th minute and Ireland Templeton scored in minute 70 off a corner kick.
Pierre had 21 shots. The Governors registered their fourth consecutive shutout.
Cole Peterson kept up his hot scoring start with four goals and an assist for the Pierre boys. Rylan Derry scored twice. Nathan Ehrisman started the scoring in the first minute for the Governors, set up by Derry. Peterson scored in the 18th minute, then Derry’s through ball found Kasey Broers for the Governors’ third goal just over a minute later. Peterson scored again in the 25th minute. Sturgis tallied in the 36th minute from Talan Kullborn. Peterson’s third of the game in the 70th minute gave Pierre a 5-1 advantage. Derry scored his second, set up by Peterson, just 45 seconds after that. Sturgis’ Carson Walter scored in the 75th minute, but then Peterson took up a Scooper turnover for his fourth of the game and 10th of the season in the 76th minute.
Both Pierre teams will play at Aberdeen Central Saturday.
