MITCHELL – Surviving a Mitchell comeback, Pierre Governor Volleyball moved to a place no Pierre team has been in well over a decade.
The Governors outlasted the Kernels Tuesday at Mitchell High School, 25-14, 25-17, 18-25, 25-27, 15-8 to start 5-0 for the first time since 2007 and earn a five-match winning streak for the first time since 2008.
Ayvrie Kaiser and Remington Price led the Pierre attack of 64 kills. Kaiser had 28 kills, 19 of which came in the last three sets, and Price added 14. Reese Terwilliger scored nine. Kaiser and Terwilliger had three aces each. Terwilliger had four blocks and Jenna Bush added two.
Kaspen Alm led Mitchell with 19 kills.
After winning the third set, Mitchell had leads of 11-4 and 19-13 before Pierre rallied for the lead. Then, the Kernels had four blocks to help force the deciding set. It began with Pierre scoring five straight points on Addison Cumbow’s serve to lead 9-3. Mitchell never came any closer.
