PIERRE – Despite not scoring an offensive touchdown until the second half Saturday, the Pierre Governors held off the Sturgis Scoopers 21-6 at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium.
The game was scoreless until Dre Berndt picked off a pass from Owen Cass and ran back an interception 30 yards for a touchdown with 2:35 left in the first half. Pierre led 7-0 at halftime after their second defensive touchdown in as many games.
Konner Berndt brought Sturgis within a point five minutes into the third quarter on a 34-point touchdown run, but the extra point was missed.
Governor quarterback Lincoln Kienholz then rushed for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Kienholz was 10-of-26 passing for 174 yards. Jack Merkwan had four catches. Pierre (2-1) was held to 40 yards rushing. Konner Berndt rushed for 89 yards for Sturgis (0-3).
