In 2020, almost 18,000 South Dakotans received treatment for a mental health disorder and more than 11,000 received treatment for a substance use disorder.
September is Behavioral Health Recovery Month in South Dakota.
Treatment for mental health issues and substance use disorders is available– regardless of ability to pay– through the state Department of Social Services.
Secretary Laurie Gill says treatment and recovery services are effective and people can– and do– recover from mental health issues and substance use disorders. She says DSS offers a variety of training opportunities, both in person and virtually, designed to help identify, understand and respond to signs of crisis.
Gill says knowing what to do and where to turn in a crisis is one of the most effective ways to prevent suicides in our communities. She says DSS can help cover costs associated with the trainings, if needed.
Available trainings include:
-

-
