President Biden recently announced the nomination of Elaine Trevino to serve as chief agriculture negotiator for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). Trevino is currently president of the Almond Alliance of California and serves on USDA’s Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee (APAC).
U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) President and CEO Dan Halstrom praised Trevino’s nomination and said it is important to have USTR operating at full strength. Other USTR appointees awaiting Senate confirmation include two nominees for deputy USTR and the nominee to serve as U.S. ambassador to the World Trade Organization.
Halstrom noted USTR’s role in addressing several critical matters affecting U.S. red meat exports, including adjustments to Japan’s safeguard threshold on imports of U.S. beef, ensuring that China meets its commitments under the Phase One Economic and Trade Agreement and dealing with the European Union’s Farm to Fork Initiative, which has the potential to impact global meat production and trade.
