South Dakota State University Extension is holding an online “Heirlooms: Creative Life Writing” workshop this afternoon (Oct. 5, 2021) from 1-3pm CDT.
The session is free, open to the public and will center around participants’ heritage.
Class facilitator Molly Barari says the information will focus on writing the stories of our ancestors. Although we may not have met our ancestors, she says we can bring these people to life with vivid descriptions and sensory details. Genealogical research methods will be discussed, along with writing techniques you can use to make your stories shine.
For the workshop, Barari says participants should come with an ancestor in mind they’d like to write about and basic information about that person. Attendees should also have access to a notebook and pen or a Word program on their computer. All ages of adults are welcome to attend.
Please register by visiting the SDSU Extension events website.
According to Leacey Brown, SDSU Extension Gerontology Field Specialist, creative life story writing helps sharpen the mind and provides a therapeutic outlet for emotions. While the process may seem overwhelming at first, she says participants will be creating a treasured document that they can leave behind for family and friends.
Brown says as we age, we tend to become more connected with our family members who came before us. By encouraging South Dakotans to write their personal life story, they are capturing important elements of the history of South Dakota. She says through these writings future generations will have access to stories that will give them insight into what it was like to live in South Dakota during the late 20th and early 21st century.
