Our Feel Good Friday stories for the week…
1. A shelter in North Carolina posted photos of a cat and guinea pig, looking for someone to adopt them both. Their previous owner had to give them up, and they’re bonded. They sleep in the same cage and snuggle up at night. The shelter posted a video of them earlier this month. Then “People” magazine did a story. And one day later, a woman and her son adopted them both.
2. A hiker in Canada fell into a river, right below a waterfall last week, and couldn’t get out. But five other hikers spotted him and saved his life. They tied some clothes together, and one guy used his turban. They ended up with a makeshift rope that was 30 feet long, and used it to pull the guy up.
3. There’s a group called Freedom Paws that pairs service dogs with veterans who have PTSD. And one of their dogs recently saved a guy’s life. A veteran in Illinois named Robbie Stouffer had a heart attack, but didn’t realize it. His chest was hurting, but he didn’t think it was that serious. His service dog Carolyn KNEW something was wrong though and started acting weird. He says she kept trying to sit on him, so he decided to call 911. He was unconscious when paramedics got there, but doctors inserted a stent and he’s doing much better now. Carolyn got to visit him at the hospital, and he’s back home.
4. A golfer in Australia got a hole-in-one the other day, which wouldn’t normally be news . . . except he’s 99 YEARS OLD. His name is Hugh Brown, and he’ll turn 100 in a few months. He says he’s had a hole-in-one before, but it happened in 1961.
5. Someone bought a decorative vase at a thrift store in the Pacific Northwest for five bucks. Now it’s up for auction and expected to sell for up to $15,000. Turns out it was made by a famous glassworker in Austria and dates back to 1902.
6. A woman named Debbie Blount recently made the golf team at Reinhardt University in Georgia. And she’s in the news, not because she’s the best college golfer in America . . . but because she’s probably the OLDEST. She’s 63 years old, and a sophomore. Her husband passed away a while back, and he’s the one who introduced her to golf. She says she only started playing because she wanted to spend more time with him. Instead of being sad every day, she decided to move on with her life and go back to school. Her coach says she’s a VERY good golfer, and her teammates have already learned a lot from her. She’s also the first person in her family to go to college, and she’s already popular at school. She’s currently in the running for homecoming queen.
7. An Iowa couple in their late-90s recently celebrated their 77th anniversary. And the nurses who help care for them at home organized a photo shoot . . . because they didn’t have any ACTUAL wedding photos. Their names are Royce and Frankie King. He’s 98, and she’s 97. They got married in 1944 but didn’t get any pictures. So their nurses helped them renew their vows and did a whole photo shoot. He wore his old Air Force uniform, which he still fits into. They found her an old vintage wedding gown from the 1940s. (Here are the photos.)
8. A cop in Palm Coast, Florida pulled a three-year-old kid from a burning building on Sunday, and his chest-cam got it all on video. He found him hiding under a blanket.
