Six vehicles were damaged over the weekend after colliding with cows that wandered onto Interstate 29 in Brookings County.
The sheriff’s department says the initial call came in a little before 1:30 Saturday morning (Oct. 16, 2021) of a vehicle that struck a cow a few miles north of the Bruce-White exit. When first responders got there, they discovered approximately 90 cows had wandered onto the interstate and into the ditch through an open gate. As a Brookings County deputy was taking a report of the first accident, five more vehicles, including a city of Brookings fire truck struck additional cows.
The combined damage to the vehicles is estimated at more than $26,000. The total loss of the cattle is estimated at $11,500.
