PIERRE – With the second seed in 11AA and the ESD championship on the line and in an emotional game, the Brookings Bobcats came through.
Tyson Brandt’s second touchdown run of the game, a four-yard run with 1:27 remaining, gave Brookings a 21-14 win over the Pierre Governors Thursday at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium. Pierre (7-2) is the third seed in the 11AA playoffs, which will begin October 28.
Down 14-6, Pierre had tied the game with 3:44 left. Lincoln Kienholz threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a nine-yard strike to Matthew Hanson, followed by Kienholz running in the tying two-point conversion.
Kienholz had thrown a scoring pass to Cade Kaiser in the first quarter before Brandt and Hunter Gray scored second-quarter rushing touchdowns for Brookings.
The Bobcats’ defense denied two potential Governor touchdowns, intercepting Kienholz twice in the end zone. Kienholz had been intercepted only twice all season before Thursday.
Kienholz was 30 of 55 for 365 yards. Hanson had six catches for 108 yards. Jack Merkwan had nine receptions for 87 yards.
Kienholz ran 14 times for 90 yards.
Pierre will host sixth-seed Watertown on October 28 in the quarterfinal round of the 11AA playoffs.
