Several dozen residents of Fort Pierre attended last night’s (Mon.) city council meeting to get more information about the plaza area to be developed when the new Missouri River Bridge is built starting in 2021.
Mayor Gloria Hanson says the council approved a $30,000 agreement with an architectural firm to develop a design for the space.
Hanson says this is a one-time chance to create a useful area that will leave a lasting impression about Fort Pierre.
She says the plaza will be designed so people can safely get closer to the water.
The state pays for the cost of building the new Lt. Cmdr. John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge between Pierre and Fort Pierre, but the towns have to pay for any additional enhancements. Between features agreed upon with Pierre and the plaza area on the west side of the bridge, Hanson says Fort Pierre is looking at spending approximately $350,000. Pierre is looking at spending around $380,000.
The structure is scheduled for a Fall 2020 letting with construction during the 2021 and 2022 construction seasons.
