The boys’ and girls’ seasons for the Oahe Capitals both started successfully Friday, with multi-goal performances leading the way for each team.
MITCHELL – Carter Sanderson had a hat trick with an assist and Ashton Griese scored twice with two assists Friday as the Oahe Capital boys opened their 2021-22 season with a 9-0 rout of the Mitchell Marlins at the Mitchell Activities Center.
Sanderson scored the only goal of the first period for the Capitals, but then scored twice in a six-goal second period, which included power play and even-strength goals from Griese. Jonathan Lyons and Barrett Schweitzer also scored in the middle period, with Devin Dodson and Keller Herman closing the scoring in the third period. Dre Berndt had two assists for the Capitals. Kieran Duffy stopped all 25 Mitchell shots for his first career shutout in net.
Next for the Capitals will be games at Aberdeen, Watertown and Huron from December 3-5.
FORT PIERRE – Ashton Lee tallied four times Friday, her third career game with at least that many goals, to lead the Oahe Capital girls to a season-opening 7-3 win over the Huron All-Stars at the Expo Center.
Lee, who recently committed to playing at the University of Jamestown when it begins its women’s hockey program in 2022-23, scored three of her goals in the third period when the Capitals opened up a lead that had been 2-0 after 17 minutes to 5-2 after two periods. Lee also had an assist in her first girls’ varsity game since 2018-19. She had played JV and some varsity for the Capital boys teams of the last two seasons.
Kiersten Miller scored twice for the Capitals, and Olivia Swenson and Kiersten Miller also tallied. Adisyn Gray had three assists. Abagail Stewart-Fromm made 19 saves for the win in goal.
The Capitals will host the Rushmore Thunder at 5:00 PM on Saturday at the Expo Center, then will play Brookings at home at 2:00 PM on Sunday.
