State senators this week approved a resolution praising South Dakota U.S. Sens. John Thune and Mike Rounds for voting to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. And, both the state House and Senate passed resolutions urging the funding of steel barriers at the southern border.
Senate assistant majority leader Jim Bolin sponsored the bill showing support for Justice Kavanaugh.
Senate minority leader Troy Heinert says resolutions aren’t supposed to be used in this manner.
House minority leader Jamie Smith is disappointed legislators spent time this week discussing Pres. Donald Trump’s proposed wall along the Mexican border because it’s a topic they have no control over.

Resolutions express the Legislature’s opinions but don’t have the force of law.
Pres. Trump and congressional Democrats have been at an impasse over funding for the proposed wall, which has led to the partial government shutdown. Today (Thurs.) is day 27 of the partial federal government shutdown– the longest ever in the US.
