People who regularly travel through the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Euclid Avenue in Pierre are hopefully encountering a smoother flow of traffic this week.
City manager Kristi Honeywell says the City’s Electric Department recently installed a camera at the corner to improve traffic flow.
Mayor Steve Harding says they’re glad the community brought the concern forward. He says it was a relatively easy fix that the City was happy to make, once they knew there was an issue.
Pierre Utilities director Brad Palmer says the city has in-ground sensors at a number of other locations and haven’t had issues with them. He says there are a number of cameras used for traffic flow around Pierre. Though those cameras are maintained by city staff, but are owned by the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
The Elizabeth-Euclid intersection serves as a major artery for east-west traffic in Pierre. Its traffic count peaks during the morning and afternoon work commutes as drivers make their way to and from the state capitol complex and the schools located in central Pierre.
