MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A jury will resume deliberations in the trial of a suburban Minneapolis police officer who says she meant to use her Taser instead of her gun when she shot and killed Black motorist Daunte Wright. The jury returns Tuesday (Dec. 21, 2021) after meeting for about a half-day Monday following closing arguments. Prosecutors accused Kim Potter of a “blunder of epic proportions” in Wright’s death in an April 11 traffic stop — but said a mistake was no defense. Potter’s attorneys countered that Wright, who was attempting to get away from officers as they sought to handcuff him for an outstanding warrant on a weapons charge, “caused the whole incident.” Potter, who is white, resigned two days after Wright’s death.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prosecutors are expected to wrap up their case Thursday (Dec. 16, 2021) against the Minnesota police officer charged in Daunte Wright’s death. That will set the stage for a defense that at some point will have Kim Potter directly addressing the jury. Potter has said she meant to use her Taser when she shot Wright on April 11, as he tried to get away from officers at a traffic stop. But her attorneys have also argued that she was within her rights to use deadly force because a fellow officer was endangered. A use-of-force expert testified for the prosecution Wednesday that he did not believe Potter was justified to use deadly force.
