The inaugural cohort of students of the Learn & Earn program offered through Capital City Campus in Pierre have been assigned to their internship sites.
The program, offered by Dakota Wesleyan University, integrates classroom and online learning with professional work experience. Students enrolled participate in a year-long, part-time, paid internship while completing their professional certificates.
Program coordinator Jessica Carr says students had the opportunity to interview with different organizations, and the businesses themselves were involved in decision-making and on-boarding the interns. She says students who successfully complete the program will receive their associate degree, which can transfer into a related bachelor’s degree program.
Carr says the Learn & Earn Program is divided into four, four-month modules including professional readiness; business fundamentals; management and marketing; and industry-specific areas. She says weekly schedules place students in a combination of two or three days in the classroom and two or three days at their internships.
Carr says they’re holding a drop-in, open house style informational session Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, from 5-6:30pm at the Capital City Campus (925 E. Sioux Ave.) in Pierre. Those planning to attend are asked to register at www.dwu.edu/pierre_events. Refreshments will be served.
Businesses where this cohort of Learn & Earn interns are working include BankWest; the South Dakota Bureau of Telecommunications and Information; Branding Iron Bistro; the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation; Independent Insurance Agents of South Dakota and Lee Real Estate.
Applications are now being accepted for Fall 2022. For more information about the program or to apply, visit www.dwu.edu/learnandearn. Information is available for students, business partners and coaches.
