PIERRE – Wrestler Shaylee Speck and basketball’s Lincoln Kienholz are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending December 18, 2021.
Speck finished second in the girls’ 100-pound weight class in the Border Brawl on December 18 in Ashley, North Dakota. Governor Girls’ Wrestling Head Coach Matt Thorson said of Speck, a seventh-grader, “Though she be but little, she is fierce! Looks can be deceiving. Shaylee is often undersized against her opponents, but she is almost always the aggressor and takes it to whoever is on the mat with her. Shaylee always seems to be happy and excited for the chance to step on the mat and give everything she has, no matter the opponent. She brings a positive attitude to practice every day and loves competing at everything she does. She has a loose and goofy manner that brings joy to everyone she interacts with. It’s a joy getting to coach her and see her improve every week.”
Kienholz continued his and the Governor Boys Basketball team’s great start (4-0) by combining for 50 points and over 10 rebounds and assists in home wins over Sturgis and Spearfish. Head Coach Brianna Kusler said, “Lincoln continues to grow his game with each opportunity he has to step on the floor. The statistics speak for themselves in his ability to play the game of basketball, but his coachability and unselfish nature are what take him to the next level. Through the first four games, he has found himself in many different scenarios, and each time he continues to elevate everyone around him. His strong court awareness and ability to create will continue to pose challenges for opponents. Lincoln leads by example, is growing into a vocal leader, shares the ball well, and refuses to become complacent in any element of the game.”
