PIERRE – Wrestlers Gianna Stangeland and Jayden Wiebe were named as the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 19.
Stangeland was 34-3 with 27 pins in the regular season. Head Coach Matt Thorson said of Stangeland: “Gianna is one of the true leaders on the team and pushes everyone in the room to compete at her level. She brings a positive energy to practice every day and makes others better just by forcing them to wrestle at her pace. Her thirst for being great makes it fun to coach her. On top of her 4.0 GPA in the classroom, she is a dedicated student of the sport. She is constantly asking questions on how to improve in situations and wanting to watch film to see what she can do better next time. Gianna is a huge reason that the girls’ wrestling team is having as much success as they are this season. It has been fun to watch her grow throughout the last 2 years, and I look forward to watching her continue to have success as she puts in more time in the sport.”
Wiebe won the 3A regional title at 160 pounds. Head Coach Shawn Lewis said: “Jayden did so in dominant fashion by controlling every match start to finish. Wiebe has been a great leader by example on the team all year. He comes to practice and works extremely hard. His chill demeanor keeps himself and the rest of the team in good spirits and able to preserve even the most difficult of situations.”
