JUNE 2024:
A U.S. District Court Judge has handed down the punishment to an Olympia, Washington, man convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Lawrence Swan, age 63, was sentenced to five years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Swan was indicted for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance by a federal grand jury in January of 2022. He pleaded guilty on March 10, 2024.
This conviction stems from a conspiracy to purchase marijuana in Washington and transport it across the country to be sold in several other states, including South Dakota, that occurred between January 1, 2020, and December 13, 2021. During this time frame Swan made five different trips across the country distributing marijuana.
On December 13, 2021, Swan was stopped outside of McLaughlin, South Dakota, and found to have over 80 pounds of marijuana, methamphetamine, and a large amount of cash in his possession. Swan admitted to distributing over 280 pounds of marijuana during the course of the conspiracy.
This case was investigated by the Corson County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted the case.
MARCH 2022:
An Olympia, Washington, man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Lawrence Allan Swan, age 63, pled not guilty.
The Indictment alleges that between January 2020 and December 2021, in South Dakota and elsewhere, Swan knowingly and intentionally conspired with others to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 50 kilograms or more of marijuana.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years in federal prison and/or a $1,000,000 fine, lifetime of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the Corson County Sherriff’s Office, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services.
Swan was released on bond pending trial.
