Alice I. Nehlich, 100, Eureka, SD, died Sunday, September 15, 2024 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.
Alice Irene Nehlich, daughter of Anna (Ritter) and Jacob Nehlich, Jr., was born November 17, 1923 on the family farm five miles south of Eureka. This is where she was raised and attended the Bauer #4 Rural School. She stayed and worked on the farm until 1943 when she moved to Spokane, WA. She worked at a Newberry’s Store as a clerk for one year. In 1944, she moved to Seattle and began her career with the Woolworth Department Store Company. She also studied business courses at night school. She worked her way up to merchandise supervisor for Woolworth Stores in 10 western states and Alaska and Hawaii. At the time of her retirement in 1987, she was managing stores in Palm Springs and Salinas, CA. Alice broke the glass ceiling at Woolworth’s as she was among the first women managers. Upon her retirement, she settled in Hemet, CA. In 2002, she returned to live in Eureka. She was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church. She enjoyed going to musicals and was a voracious reader.
Alice was preceded in death by her father, Jacob, on October 8, 1978; her mother, Anna, on March 22, 1972; two brothers-Arthur and Otto; and one sister, Elsie Nehlich.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 19, 2024 at Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka, led by Pastor Ryan Gage. Vocal selections will be “What a Friend we have in Jesus” and “On Eagle’s Wings”. Interment follows at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Eureka.
Honorary bearers will be Gary and Merrill Ackerman of Eureka.
Casketbearers will be Wayne Nehlich, Kevin Nehlich, Remington Nehlich, and Christy Schwingler all of Eureka.
Visitation will be at Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel, Eureka, from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday.
