On October 12th, 2021, Anton “Tony” Schneider was called home by his heavenly Father at the age of 89.
Delivered by his maternal grandmother, Tony was born on March 7th, 1932, in a log cabin along the Grand River near Wakpala to Joseph and Regina (Bosch) Schneider. He grew up on the family farm/ranch as the oldest of six siblings.
In 1953 he was drafted by the United States Army and served two years in Korea before being honorably discharged in 1954. He spent the next eight years in the Army Reserve.
After returning from overseas Tony met the love of his life, Norma Hepper. Tony and Norma’s courtship turned into an elopement in June 1st, 1956, and together they moved to Kalispell, Montana where Tony worked as a lineman. After two years in Kalispell the couple moved back to the family farm where he began working with his father farming and ranching.
Following the three years on the family farm, Tony and Norma purchased the Corner Bar in McLaughlin, South Dakota. Five years later his passion for farming led him to purchase a farm two miles west of town where he would spend the rest of his life doing what he loved.
Tony was an integral part of the community in many distinct ways. He served as a member of the McLaughlin Hospital Board and the Corson County Weed Board. Additionally, he was a devout member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in McLaughlin.
Aside from farming and ranching, Tony’s other great love in the world was family. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a humble man and a true friend whose word was worth gold and laughter filled the room.
Truly a joy to be around, his sense of humor shone through in the countless practical jokes that he played on all those around him.
Tony will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, Norma Schneider of McLaughlin, children Diane (Mike) Mickelson of McLaughlin, David Schneider of Sturgis, SD, Tina Turner of Sidney, MT, Tammy (Patrick) Hersch of Spearfish, SD, Kent (Kim) Schneider of McLaughlin, SD, Jim (Mary) Schneider of Rathdrum, ID, and Paul (Lisa) Schneider of Spearfish, SD and his 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His siblings Agnes Wingerter, Linda (Loren) Yates and Kay (Steve) Aberle.
