Arlee Fredrick Eagle Chasing was born on May 21, 1953, at Old Cheyenne Agency, to Marion Albert Eagle Chasing Sr. of Moreau River and Irene Marie Red Nest of Oglala. Arlee was one out of five children and was raised along Moreau River in a cabin until the age of eight, when his family moved to Bear Creek S.D., along with his siblings Delores Eagle Chasing (Ballard), Carol Eagle Chasing, Marion (Shash) Eagle Chasing Jr., and Brenda Eagle Chasing (Smart).
Arlee spent his childhood riding horses and playing games with his younger brother Shash and childhood friend Ellery Charging Thunder. In 1970, Arlee was blessed with a nephew, George Eagle Chasing, who was adopted by his parents and became his baby brother, whom he was always proud of.
In 1972, at the age of 17, Arlee enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, for a term of three years and twenty-seven days. Upon his return home, Arlee was welcomed and blessed with a niece, Nella Eagle Chasing, and nephew, Christopher Eagle Chasing, who were also a big part of his life because, they too were being raised by his parents, Marion and Irene.
Arlee worked a variety of jobs and indulged in alcohol until 1987, when his mother Irene passed away, and he began his sobriety. In 1988, his father passed away and Arlee took custody of his niece Nella, and nephew Christopher. When they became of age, Arlee continued his sobriety and received an associate degree from Si Tanka University and a degree in social work from Northern State University. Arlee worked fourteen years at the Sacred Heart Adolescent Home in Eagle Butte, two years at the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal VocRehab program, seven years at the Si Tanka College Center, three years as a child protection social worker, and thirteen years at the Cheyenne River Housing Authority.
Arlee had no children of his own, but helped his sister Brenda raise her two children, Eunice Smart III, and Leilih Smart. Arlee enjoyed taking his nephews and niece hunting and fishing when he could. When Arlee became a grandfather, he was so happy and proud, especially when his grandson Ezekial R’li Marshall (Bubba) gave him the name YA-YA. Arlee also helped his niece Leilih raise her children as well.
Arlee enjoyed watching rodeos as well as westerns, which he called “cowboy shows,” and attending Pow-wows. Arlee found comfort in God and gave thanks to Jesus every morning, praising his name. He often spoke about how blessed he was because of Jesus and enjoyed bible study as well as attending church, at the Red Warriors Ministries.
