Arthur A. Weitschat, 82, of Pierre, previously of Hot Springs, passed away Monday, April 18, 2022. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00am, Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hot Springs, SD. Inurnment of Arthur and his wife Doris will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Adolph and Evelyn (Pagles) Weitschat in Detroit, MI. After high school he attended Wayne State University College of Liberal Arts in Detroit where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography/Cultural/ Map Intelligence and continued on to earn his Masters of Arts in Geography. At Wayne State he participated in Men’s Glee Club and was active in the Lutheran Church.
Art married the love of his life, Doris Pauletich in Dearborn, MI in the Mary Martha Chapel at Greenfield Village on March 22, 1975. To this union was born a son, Jonathan whom brought them much joy.
Art taught geography in the Detroit public schools from 1971 till 1982. The voice of God called Art to ministry; he followed and studied theology at Christ Seminary-Seminex and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. His early years in ministry led him to churches in Utah and Pennsylvania before he and the family settled in South Dakota where he served the South Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America from April of 1993 until his retirement in September of 2013. Art served churches in the rural Irene area, Astoria, the Buffalo area (including Little Missouri, Ladner and Lake Gardner), and Kadoka.
Art had many interests that included his love of music and playing the piano and singing in choirs. He had a passion for travel and visited many places in the United States and around the world. (He had a special appreciation for Ireland and New Zealand.) He also had a love of trains and watching the weather channel and keeping up with what was going on around the country and world. One of his greatest joys in his later years was getting be a part of seeing his son marry and have children. He was a loving grandfather to Katherine and Edwin. He took great pride and joy in being able to baptize them and watch them grow.
Art’s faith in his savior Jesus Christ saw him rise to new life when he passed away after having spent the day prior celebrating Easter with his son Jonathan. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris, his parents Arthur and Evelyn and his sister Emily Wolosynski. He is survived by his son Jonathan (Jessica) Weitschat of Pierre, SD, his grandchildren Katherine and Edwin, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
