Private family Funeral service for Avis Hanson age 95 of Mobridge, will be Monday, December 7, 2020 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Justin Van Orman officiating. Interment will be in the Mobridge City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Avis passed away Sunday, November 29, 2020 at Avantara Nursing Home in Redfield, SD.
Avis Murriel Hanson was born at home on September 29, 1925 near Rockham, SD to Melford and Muriel (Yada) Hagen. She attended a country school south of Rockham until her junior high, with no high school classes, she moved to Miller, SD to live with the Oviatt family, where she helped with their children, cooking, washing and ironing clothes in exchange for room and board. Avis graduated 12th grade on June 3, 1943.
After graduation Avis moved to Mobridge to work for Social Services. She met John Hanson in late 1944 was was married 6 months later, March 3, 1945. They farmed east of Mobridge until moving to town. She was a stay at home mom until the girls were in 3rd and 5th grade. She went to work for McClellan-Swanson Clinic as a dental tech and finished in the front office. Her retirement was sad for her due to the love she felt for all those around her.
Avis was very active in the Moose and was President of American Legion Auxiliary, also loved her church and helped make many quilts with her friends.
In later years Avis truly looked forward to her coffee time with friends, she said when the phone rang with an invite to coffee she was out the door before she hung up the phone. The girls would meet at Donna’s every Tuesday morning. Donna, Sandi, Donna B. and Barb, you were so loved by mom!
John and Avis had four children, Bill, Bob, Peggy and Bette.
Avis is survived by her children, Bob (Jackie) Hanson, Peg (Jay) Ritter and Bette (Mark) Hanson, 2 brothers, Clifford and Gale (Ginny) Hagen, survived by 4 grandchildren, Jessica, Patrick, Brian, Allison and 7 great-grandchildren.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband, John, son, Bill, 1 brother, in infancy, sister, Darlene Benson, grandson, Casey and parents.
