Mass of Christian Burial for Bernadette “Bunny” Fjeldheim, 76, of Herreid formerly of Pollock will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, 12, 2024, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Herreid. Burial will be at Spring Creek Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5:30 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM Friday at the church. Bernadette passed away Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Herreid Good Samaritan Center.
Bernadette Mary Weinzirl was born January 7, 1948, to Joseph and Ella (Sayler) Weinzirl in Herreid, South Dakota. She graduated from Herreid High School in 1966.
Following high school, she worked four and a half years at the Prairie Picayune for two great bosses, W.H. Jahraus and Bill Boomersbach. She also assisted her dad and siblings who operated Joe’s Mobil Service.
Bernadette met the love of her life, Alvin Fjeldheim of Pollock, while they were in high school. They were married April 17, 1971. Two weeks later they reported to Ft. Hood, Texas where Alvin was a 1st Lieutenant with the Army Armour Division for the next two years. Their son Paul was born June 10, 1972, at Darnall Army Hospital.
Following their two-year commitment in Texas, they returned to Pollock in 1973. Farming became their lifelong way of life and Bernadette soon learned she had another new career – Meals on Wheels!
Their second son, Jeff, was born in Mobridge in 1977. Happiness was overflowing when three grandchildren were born. Grandpa and Grandma had the privilege of babysitting each of them until they started school.
Bernadette’s hobbies included reading, baking, collecting recipes and cookbooks, record albums and taking thousand of pictures of friends and relatives and making albums for them. She also spent time updating the Weinzirl and Sayler family histories, which her mother had started. She also worked on updating Fjeldheim history. Bernadette was a lifelong member of the St. Michael’s Church and Altar Society.
Surviving are her two sons and their wives; Paul and Brandy (Vanden Hoek) Fjeldheim and Jeff and Jen (Rieck) Fjeldheim; grandchildren Katelynn Jo, Dylan James and Aubree Lynn all of Pollock, sister Bea Goetz of Java, sisters in law Wendy Weinzirl of Mandan, ND, Phyllis Fjeldheim of Pollock; Rita Fjeldheim of Selby, Holly Fjeldheim of Herreid, special aunt and uncle Hope and Liz Steele, of CA, plus many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Alvin, her parents, Joe and Ella Weinzirl, in laws, Andrew and Arlouine Fjeldheim, two infant brothers, brother and wife, Stanley and Janice Weinzirl and brother, Joe Weinzirl and sister, Joan and John Grad and in laws, Orland Fjeldheim, Henry and Evelyn Quenzer, Delores Fjeldheim, Kenneth Fjeldheim, Earl and Judy Fjeldheim, Ernest Fjeldheim, Larry and Gladys Fjeldheim, Shervin Fjeldheim, Andrew Fjeldheim Jr., Michael (Jim) Fjeldheim and Jerry Goetz.
