PIERRE, SD – Boyd Emerson Roseland, youngest son of William A. and Nora Theresa Hanson-Roseland, was born January 17, 1929, at Faulkton, SD. He passed away at Avera Maryhouse Long Term Care, Pierre, SD, on July 8, 2024. Services are pending.
His childhood was spent on the family farm southeast of Seneca, SD. He attended a one-room school house in rural Faulk County through the eighth grade, Seneca High School and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1946. He went on to attend Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD, obtaining his South Dakota Teacher’s Certificate.
Thirty-seven years of Public Employment included: Teaching one year in a Faulk County one-room school, leaving the profession when he was drafted into the United States Army, serving during the Korean War, stationed at Big Delta, in Alaska. Following his military service, he began 22 years of employment as a Payroll Accountant with the South Dakota Department of Transportation. He would go on to complete twelve years as the first Benefits Administrator for the South Dakota Retirement System. Following his retirement in 1986, he was approached to serve as an independent pre-retirement benefits counselor, assisting countless Department of Transportation, Department of Education, South Dakota Unified Courts and South Dakota Highway Patrol retirees. He would “retire” for good in 2014, after 28 years of service to his fellow South Dakota retirees.
Boyd and Deloris Marie Bryant were married on May 21, 1951. Following his military service, they and their son, Marlin, moved to Pierre, SD in 1954. Their son Tom joined the family in 1955.
Throughout his life he served on numerous community-based organizations. Boyd and Deloris were active members of First United Methodist Church, American Legion, South Dakota Employees Organization and Sons of Norway. They were avid supporters of Pierre Players, the Community Concert series, and the Ballroom Swishers Dance Club. Cards and socializing with friends filled their retirement days.
In addition to his wife of 64 years and his family, he had two great loves: the State of South Dakota and traveling the 50 states, Canada, the Caribbean, and passing through the Panama Canal.
The love of his life, Deloris, preceded him in death in 2015. Survivors include his sons: Marlin (Ardys) and Tom, granddaughter Whitnea (Jason) Engelbrecht and grandson Brady Roseland, twin great granddaughters Anna and Kayla, sisters-in-law, Dianna Binfet of Aberdeen and Phyllis Bryant of Faulkton. Preceding him in death are his wife Deloris, daughter in law Hillary Jean Brady-Roseland; his parents; stepmother Eileen; brothers: Bud, Rex, Gene, Bevin, Ronald, Gary and Richard; sisters: Gayl, Blodwyn, Corrine, and infant sister, Bernice; eight sisters in law: and five brothers in law.
Boyd will be missed by his family and friends.
