We regretfully announce that on February 12, 2023, Brian Keith Hinkley passed away, peacefully at his home. He was surrounded by loved ones, in his own bed, and with his beloved dog, Ava, at his feet. Brian fought a brave battle with a terrible chronic illness; he was just 56 years old.
Brian was born on October 17th, 1966 in Pierre, SD, to Dave and Elizabeth Hinkley. He made an impact in many peoples lives; he lived in California, Arizona, New Mexico, multiple places around Texas, Wisconsin, and all over South Dakota. He was always a mechanic by trade, and a racer by passion. He held certification as a Master Mechanic from the ASE, as well as certification to diagnose, repair, and inspect cranes. You could usually find Brian in a garage (where he made sure the music was loud) with his hands in an engine, a bandana on his head, and a cigarette in his mouth. Brian loved to diagnose and fix vehicles, but he also loved to drive FAST. He was a skilled racing driver and won awards at the Big Bend Open Road Races in Texas and the South Dakota Mustang Rally. Brian’s passion for music will live on in all that knew him. Many people were influenced and inspired by his wide range of music taste; everyone will remember his jam sessions fondly, except maybe his neighbors.
Brian is survived by his three daughters, Mary Beth Morris, Jackie (Hinkley) Parr, and Raqui Hinkley, as well as his grandson Joseph Morris, granddaughter Violet Parr, and grandson Raphael (RJ) Zagame. Also surviving are his parents and siblings, Dave Hinkley, Elizabeth Hinkley, Trent Hinkley, Chris Hinkley, and Anne (Hinkley) Shaben. Brian has many nieces, nephews, and cousins that also love him dearly. The family would like to thank Teresa Neuman personally. She was his closest friend, roommate, and became his personal caregiver as his disease progressed. The family is working on planning a celebration of life/graveside memorial in the spring. Family will update Brian’s memorial website with that information as soon as possible. We would also like to give a special thanks to Trevor and all the staff at Sanford Hospice, as well as Anna Husman and Katie, for making sure that Brian’s wishes were able to be carried out. We couldn’t have done it without all of them.
