Chester C. Beck, 84, Herreid, SD, died Friday, September 9, 2022 at Prairie Heights Healthcare, Aberdeen, SD.
Chester Clayton Beck, son of Edward and Lydia (Schmidt) Beck, was born April 4, 1938. He was born and spent nearly all his life on the Beck farm 3 miles west of Artas, SD. He attended Orth Country School and Herreid High School, graduating with the Class of 1955. Chester married Carol Pfaff at Java, SD on September 2, 1960. They farmed raising cattle and grain. Carol entered the Eureka Healthcare Center the fall of 2008. In November 2010, Chester relocated to Herreid, where he lived the rest of his life. Chester was a lifelong active member of the Reformed Church in Artas, Eureka, and lastly in Herreid. He enjoyed playing card games, whist, cribbage, and most of all pinochle. He played with multiple card clubs, and you could find him playing pinochle at the Super Stop almost every morning. As a lifelong farmer, he would take frequent drives to the farm to check the crops and cattle. He enjoyed spending time with his family and would light up when he saw his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He attended as many sporting events as he could when his grandchildren were playing and continued supporting the local sport teams even after they all had graduated.
Chester is survived by one daughter, Tina (Mark) Rahm of Aberdeen; one son, Troy (Lisa) Beck of Artas; three grandchildren; Colby (Kaytlin) Beck, Robert Beck, Marissa (Brandon) Duquette, two great grandchildren; Bennett Beck, Hayden Duquette, and his special friend, Shirley Moser.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward, on February 8, 1978; his mother, Lydia, on September 12, 1982; his wife, Carol, on November 8, 2012; two brothers and sisters-in-law Ruben and Alice, Floyd and Gladys; two sisters and brothers-in-law Edna and Edwin Rohrbach, Esther and Albert Rohrbach.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at the First Reformed Church, Herreid, led by Rev. Cody Schwichtenberg. Interment follows at the Artas Cemetery. Organist will be Angie Schwichtenberg and she will sing “Abide with Me”. Congregational songs will be “Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound” and “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”. Earl Mehlhaff will play “Little Girl’s Waltz” as an accordion recessional selection. Ushers will be Josh Sayler and Chester Sayler.
Casketbearers will be Colby Beck and David Deurmier of Artas; Robert Beck and Douglas Beck of Herreid; Brandon Duquette of Eureka, SD; and Chad Pfaff of Gretna, NE.
Visitation commences 5:00 PM Monday at Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel of Eureka with a 7:00 PM prayer service.
