Funeral services for Christine “Chris” Johnson, 83, of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2023 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reliance, SD with burial in the Reliance Cemetery at Reliance, SD. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain, SD.
Christine Dorothy Petersen was born April 28, 1940 to Arthur and Dorothy (Mathews) Petersen at home in Lyman County, SD.
Chris attended school in Reliance, SD and then graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1959. She received her LPN diploma after attending the Pierre School of Practical Nursing under Sister Rosalie Sitzmann, in September of 1960.
Chris was united in marriage to Bruce A Johnson on March 17th 1961 and to that union she was blessed with five children.
She began her fifty-two-year nursing career at the Community Bailey Hospital, later Mid-Dakota Hospital, and lastly ended her career in healthcare at Sanford Hospital, all in Chamberlain.
She loved being outside with her garden and her roses. Drawing, ceramics, and shopping brought her joy., and she loved assisting others with whatever they needed. She always put others first and never complained about anything even up until the very end.
She was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reliance, SD. She was honored on the Employee Wall of Fame at Sanford Chamberlain Hospital for working 45+ years.
Chris passed away on May 2, 2023 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 83 years.
Chris is survived by two sons Kevin Johnson and wife Brenda of Reliance, SD and Doug Johnson of Chamberlain SD; two daughters Gail Goetsch of Springfield, IL, and Cheryl Adams and husband Donnie of Hartford, SD, daughter-in law- Rhonda Johnson of Oacoma; one sister Anna Parker of Smithville, TN; and six very special grandchildren, Shawn Goetsch, Kristen Gregg (Chris Gregg), William Peter Johnson, Robert Charles Johnson, Mitch Adams, Mady Adams, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A special brother in law Charles Johnson of Watertown SD, two special sister-in-laws Carol Mattheai (Robert) of Salem SD and Janice Camp(John)of Harrisburg SD.
Preceding her in death were her parents, son Darwin Johnson, grandson Jerrod Johnson, and brothers Thomas Petersen and Peter Petersen.
