Dale R. Oster, 90, Bowdle, died Monday, October 24, 2022 at the Bowdle Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, October 28, 2022 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowdle, led by Pastor David Peterson. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Bowdle American Legion Post. Organist will be Dani Hoffman and the congregation will sing “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Precious Lord, Take My hand”, “One Day At A Time”, and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Ushers will be Dale’s nephew, Maurice Hoffman, and great nephew, Jerrad Hoffman.
Dale’s family prefers memorials to the Bowdle American Legion Post, 1097 5th St., Bowdle, SD 57428.
Funeral home visitation begins 12 noon Thursday with a 6:30 PM prayer service.
Dale Raymond Oster, son of Matilda (Schlepp) and John Oster, was born at Bowdle on December 14, 1931. He was raised and educated in Bowdle, graduating with the Bowdle High School Class of 1949. He then worked on farms for his dad and Pete Hoffman. He also was employed at the Bowdle Creamery. Dale served his country in the United States Army, being inducted December 11, 1952. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1954 and settled in Rapid City, SD where he worked for Ken Brenneise doing carpentry. He married Virginia Pfaff at St. Genevieve, MO on August 20, 1955. They lived in Rapid City until 1963 when they moved to Ipswich, SD where Dale was employed at Ipswich Lumber. In 1976 they relocated to Aberdeen, SD where they purchased the Breeze-Inn Motel. They sold the motel in 1995. Dale then drove parts for Hedahl’s until his retirement in 2002. In 2007 they moved to Watertown, SD and since 2009 they have lived in Bowdle. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowdle, and the Bowdle American Legion Post No. 264. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, feeding his birds and squirrels, playing cards, having coffee with his cronies, and helping at Hoffman Farms. He especially cherished the time he could spend with his grandkids and great grandkids.
Dale is survived by Virginia “Jean”, his wife of 67 years; three sons—Todd (Sandy) Oster of Gettysburg, SD, Scott (Brenda) Oster of Custer, SD, and Chad (Kelly) Oster of Chippewa Falls, WI; two daughters—Joyce (Kevin) Harnisch of Big Stone City, SD and Jill (Steve) Schweitzer of Watertown; one brother (Ward (Arlys) Oster of Bowdle; and two sisters—Irene Hoffman of Bowdle and Doris Bieber of Grand Island, NE; 11 grandchildren—Justin Oster, Tyler Harnisch, Hunter Harnisch, Nick Oster, Chris Oster, Adam Schweitzer, Jess Sackmann, Heather Grommesch, Jaime Schweitzer, Abby Oster, and Izzy Oster; and 14 great grandchildren– Mikailah, Jaedyn, Malleah, Skyler, Harper, Hailey, Avery, Kinsley, Nolan, Miles, Dutton, Laura, Clara, and Brian.
He was preceded in death by his father, John, on September 13, 1976; his mother, Matilda, on October 13, 2000; and two brothers, Robert and an infant named Lee.
Honorary bearers will be Dale’s great grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be Dale’s grandsons.
