Damon David “Abe” Aberle, 54, originally of Trail City, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2023, near Dupree.
A celebration of life will be at 12:00 noon MST on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the Trail City Community Building, Trail City, SD.
Damon was born June 8, 1968, along with two of his first cousins. Three of the Aberle brothers’ wives had children within 12 hours at the Cheyenne Indian Health Services in Eagle Butte, SD. Damon and Robert were born on June 8th and Michael was born on the 9th, with all three boys being delivered by the same doctor. Damon David was infant born to Lawrence “Oss” and Janice (Benoist) Aberle. Well, at least we’re fairly certain he is ours. With three Aberle boys being born within 12 hours and two of the three mothers being named Janice, we’ll never really know if we brought the right one home, but they all went to good homes, so we’re fine with how it worked out.
Damon was educated in Timber Lake, SD. He was a quick learner and able to pick up on various skills easily. He was a hard worker and was known for doing excellent work and being a jack-of-all-trades. He was most proud of his accomplishments as a bull fighter, traveling extensively and working as Thump, the clown, but Thump hung up his hat years ago. In the latter part of his life, Damon embraced his native heritage and learned to fluently speak the Lakota language and learned how to drum. He used both extensively for prayers.
Damon married Kim Greathouse in 1998. Together, they had two children, Kolten James in 1990 and Kassi Ann in 1992.
Damon is survived by his daughter, Kassi (Jacob) Onstott of Scottsbluff, NE; father, Oss (Louise) of Las Vegas, NV; six grandchildren; brothers: Ruste Hambleton of Tennessee, Duste (Tracy) Newton, Clay Newton and Lawrence (Tausha) Aberle of Sidney, Ohio; sisters; Gina
(Mark) Buchanan of Brandon, SD, Lawrele (Steven) Johnson of Bismarck, ND, and Miranda Aberle-Oothoudt of Mandan, ND; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kolten Aberle in 2009; mother, Janice Schuldies; an infant brother, Ronald Aberle; nephew, Cullen Oothoudt; maternal grandparents: Cyril and Evelyn (Whitney) Benoist; and paternal grandparents: Andrew and Frances (Bollinger) Aberle.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Damon’s arrangements.
