PIERRE, SD – Daniel Ray Ferry, 83, passed away on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024, in Pierre, South Dakota. Services will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD in the spring/summer of 2025 (date and time still to be determined).
Dan was born on July 7th, 1941, to Ray and Lucille Ferry in Nevada, Missouri. After graduating from Nevada High School, he went on to study at Central Methodist College for undergrad in Fayette, MO and attended the University of Missouri for law school in Columbia, MO. Dan received a Master’s in International Law from the George Washington University Law School in Washington, DC.
After graduating from law school, Dan started a career in law that lasted over forty years. In 1970, Dan met Judy Gordon in Nevada, MO and after marriage, they moved to Washington, DC. They went on to have two sons, Matthew Gordon Ferry and Benjamin Paul Ferry.
Dan served as a captain in the Missouri Army National Guard from 1966 to 1973. In 2003, he moved from Potomac, Maryland to Pierre, South Dakota. In 2006, Dan met Sharon Whitney Freier in Pierre, and they got married in 2009.
Dan was an avid waterfowl and upland hunter, had a love of cooking delicious meals, and crown royal whiskey. Dan also had a deep faith and enjoyed reading the Bible and daily devotions.
Dan is survived by his wife, Sharon; his sons, Matthew and Benjamin, and his wife, Lauren; his stepchildren, Stephanie and her husband, Brian Williams, and Douglas Freier; his grandchildren, Amelia Ferry, Paul and James Ferry, Axel Williams, and Brooklyn Freier; his older brother, Michael Ferry; his younger sister, Becky Ferry White; and three nephews, Ray Ferry, Daniel Ferry, and Roy Wood.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Delta Waterfowl in Dan’s memory, an organization Dan felt strongly about and had been a lifetime sponsor of for over 25 years.
