Daryld Gene Walters passed away peacefully after health complications on May 24th, 2022 at Avera St Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, SD. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, June 24th at the American Lutheran Church in Presho with burial to follow at the Presho City Cemetery.
Most people would like to think they live their life on their terms. Rarely this is the case.
Gene lived the way that he wanted.
He was creative, charismatic, and witty in his own right.
Gene was a mechanical savant. He was most comfortable under the hood of a truck or wearing a welding helmet. For Gene, reading a Chilton wiring diagram was like reading for pleasure might be for others. His welds were immaculate.
He took immense pride in ownership in the care and maintenance of his vehicles and projects. When he wanted, he’d create a fine-tuned machine from a box of parts. And art out of a scrap pile of iron.
He wasn’t a gourmet chef, but he could turn a $2 steak into a meal fit for any Midwestern table. Every meal had a vegetable, potatoes and possibly a dessert
Gene loved music. He would sing to his children as they grew up. Even if it was only a couple of verses from Elvis’ “Falling in Love with You” or “Puff the Magic Dragon” from Peter, Paul & Mary. He made sure his vehicles, shops, garages, and living rooms all had the best sound system.
Gene appreciated the beauty of the land he lived on. He taught his children the importance of stewardship of animals. He looked to the stars with excitement on summer nights. Gene believed that there was more to the universe than what we can see and hear.
He always wanted the best. And even if the best wasn’t available, he would find something better. He was prideful and boastful at times. But humble when he was honest about his place in the world.
Gone, but never forgotten. May he rest in peace in his eternal home.
Gene is survived by his sister, Fay and husband Lee; his children: Zeth, Zachary and Margene; his nephew, Jeremy and his wife Lindsey and children, Quinn Ivy, Case Eli and Nora Mae; his aunt Bette Reuman and a host of other relatives and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his father-Daryld Fay, mother-Betty Jean, and grandparents.
