MURDO, SD – David W. Brost, 88, of Murdo passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025 in Madison, WI. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 15th at the Murdo Methodist Church at 2:00pm with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Murdo City Cemetery. Isburg Funeral Chapel of Murdo has been placed in care of the arrangements.
David was born, at home, on May 3, 1937 on a ranch south of Okaton to Adolph and Clare (Sisley) Brost.
He grew up and attended school in Alliance, NE until the ninth grade, after which his family moved to Murdo, where he completed his high school education. David went on to attend college at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where he also ran track and played basketball. He graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduating college, David’s professional life took him to Lewistown, MT where he worked for USG as a Mechanical Engineer. He married Linda Haugland June 4, 1960. They moved to Tacoma, WA where David served in the army during the Berlin Crisis. At age 26, he returned to his roots in South Dakota to ranch south of Draper for the next 60+ years.
He served as a South Dakota Game Fish and Park Commissioner in the 1980s. David’s love for the outdoors was evident in his pursuits as a hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed watching and playing sports. David relished visiting and telling stories with family and friends, and rarely passed on an opportunity to play card games.
David is survived by his children Paul (Denise) Brost of Madison, WI; Michelle Brost of Charlotte, NC; and Del (Christy) Brost of Murdo, SD; sisters Faye (Merle) Bartlett and Ellen (Paul) Nix, and brother Bob (Suzanne) Brost; along with six grandchildren Taylor (Casey) Collins, Jamie (Nick) Soper, Alex (Brittany) Brost, and Dillon Brost, Kade (Abby) Brost, Hannah Brost; and seven great-grandchildren.
