Most important to her heart and purpose for living were Davine’s grandchildren. They were always the motivation to keep her moving. She looked forward to seeing them and cherished every moment of every visitation that she could spend with them. She loved seeing how much they were growing and thriving, and loved spoiling them with treats as it was one of the only ways a humble grandmother could.
Makiah Lawson, Mathias Lawson, Makal Lawson, Majesteigh LaVallie, and Michael LaVallie, you meant the world to your grandma, your unci. Always remember that she loved you mightily, and will do everything in her power to watch over you from the stars above.
Davine lived an adventurous life. From a young age she loved traveling, and after graduating the 8th grade at Little Eagle Day, she attended Kicking Horse Job Corps, in Montana, where she studied welding.
From there, she moved to Minneapolis, MN, where she worked at various jobs. Davine had always had good work ethic. Wherever she traveled and moved to, be it Bismarck, ND, Rapid City, SD, Sioux Falls, SD, Valentine, NE, Eagle Butte, SD, etc., she always found a job and worked.
In her spare time Davine loved to make star quilts. She designed and created many unique and beautiful star quilts, winning an award for one that she designed while she was attending United Tribes Technical College.
Education was important to Davine as well and she always had a desire to further her knowledge. She attended United Tribes Technical College, studying Business and Psychology. She was a fierce mama standing by her daughters, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
To her daughters, she supported them and always made sure they were provided for. Her relationship with her only surviving daughter, Sophia, became stronger after the passing of her two daughters, Lakotah and Autumn.
To her relatives, grandmothers, aunties, uncles, cousins, adopted children, numerous friends she made throughout her travels, she remained dedicated and close. She talked about everyone constantly, about how she wanted to visit and spend more time; making sure that the grandbabies especially, knew that she was thinking about them with the gifts she’d present to them from her travels, unpacking, talking about where and how it got to them with Love.
We will cherish the special memories we have of our beloved one and miss her greatly. Our comfort lies in the understanding that she is free from the burden of her physical ailments and limitations, and that she is supporting and praying for us in the stars, where our people continue their spiritual journey, as we are praying for her spiritual progress alongside the rest of our tiospaye who’ve made that sacred journey.
