Funeral services for Deb Schley, 64, of Selby will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, October 30, 2020, at St. John Lutheran Church in Selby. Burial will be at the Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Thursday at the church. Deb passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020, at the Walworth County Care Center in Selby.
Debra Kay Schley was born on July 4, 1956, at Forbes Air Force Base near Topeka, KS, to Donald and Nina (Perman) Brockel. Being the daughter of an Air Force Pilot Deb moved with her family various places in her childhood including Topeka, Bermuda, Selby, San Francisco and Anchorage. Deb was part of the first graduating class of Bartlett Begich High School in Anchorage, AK. 1974. Following her graduation and Donald’s retirement the family moved to Paradise, CA, for a year before moving to Selby, SD. She started nursing school at Presentation College in Aberdeen.
Deb married Doyle Schley in Selby on February 4, 1978. They made their home in Selby and Deb began her career at the Mobridge Regional Hospital as an aide. She received her LPN degree in 1980 from Pierre School of Practical Nursing. In 1991, she received her RN degree from USD. In 1999 she began working at the Selby Good Samaritan Center until she retired.
In 2006 Deb was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. A battle she has fought for the last 14 years. After being diagnosed Deb, still stayed active enjoying bowling on women’s league and throwing darts. In July of 2012 Deb entered the Selby Good Samaritan Center where she has since resided.
Deb enjoyed traveling with Doyle to races and other adventures. She never missed any of children’s activities or sporting events. Deb had an infectious smile and great personality, traits that helped her be an excellent nurse.
Deb is survived by her husband, Doyle of Selby, sons, Eric (Kourtenay) of Mobridge, Nick (Angela Grabau) of Rochester, MN, grandsons, Rylee and Addison, mother, Nina Brockel of Selby, brother, Dave Brockel of Hoven, mother-in-law, Esther Schley of Aberdeen, sisters-in-law, Ellen (Adolph) Renner of Aberdeen and Estelle (Vern) Meyers of Aberdeen.
Deb is preceded in death by her father, Donald in 2010.
