Dennise Donovan, 56, of Gettysburg passed away tragically on Monday, December 30, 2024, as the result of an automobile accident near LaPlant, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 6, 2025, at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Laura Cook presiding. Burial will be at a later date in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Gettysburg. A prayer service will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 5, 2025, at the church with visitation one-hour prior.
Dennise was born in Pierre, SD on April 5, 1968, the youngest of twelve children to Theresa (Tobin) and Joseph Frost. Despite being the baby of the family, she quickly learned to take on a caring, responsible role. On April 16, 1988, Dennise married Shawn Donovan, and together they made their home in Gettysburg. She dedicated her life to her family, with her four children being the center of her world. Dennise’s love for her children was boundless, and her world grew even brighter when her grandchildren, Rook and Huntley, came along. Her family meant everything to her, and she reveled in her role as a mother and grandmother.
She was a woman of incredible generosity—a selfless soul who gave her time, her heart, and her energy without hesitation. Dennise always put others first, from caring for her parents in their later years to helping friends and family in any way she could. She was no-nonsense, and always blunt, but she also knew how to enjoy life. Her unique blend of common sense, honesty, and lighthearted fun made her a favorite among her nieces, nephews, and siblings. She was the “favorite aunt” who showed the younger generation how to walk the fine line between mischief and fun—always pushing the boundaries and making memories.
After many years of caring for others, Dennise returned to school earning a nursing degree, eventually becoming the director of telemedicine for Indian Health Services.
She was always on the go, balancing her career, a love for crafting, and trips with her siblings. Dennise was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She had an innate ability to make others feel important, and she would drop everything to help those she loved. Though she was content to remain in the background while others took the spotlight, Dennise’s kindness and love made her a shining star in the lives of those who knew her. She was a one-of-a-kind woman and a true gem, but her legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on in all those who were lucky enough to call her family and friend.
She is survived by her husband, Shawn Donovan; children: Tristen (Emily), Tial (Kadyn) Drew, Trent, and Tierney (Kyle Smith); grandchildren, Rook Donovan and Huntley Drew; her siblings: Dennis (Sue) Frost, Marsha (Alvin) Wager, Gary Frost, Nancy (Roger) Genzler, Steve (Martina) Frost, Mark (Kristi) Frost, Julie (Rick) Forgey, Kathy Frost, and Lynette (Jim) Marzolf; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Dennise was preceded in death by her parents, Theresa and Joseph Frost; brothers, Dan and Craig Frost; brothers-in law, Shane and Dennis Donovan; and her mother and father-in-law: Alice and Dude Donovan.
Memorials in Dennise’s honor may be directed to any local charity of your choosing.
