The family asks that you wear your favorite football jersey or superhero shirts to either service, and of course in true Derek style, mismatched socks.
Derek James Buthe was born October 14, 1992, in Sioux Falls, SD to Greg and Tracy (Bartling) Buthe. He received his education, graduating from Roosevelt High School with the class of 2011. Life for Derek was all about football, he played the game starting in the 3rd grade and continued on as a standout while in high school. Following graduation, Derek went to play with the Saints at Presentation College in Aberdeen. He received his Bachelor of Inner Disciplinary Studies and made many lifelong friendships.
While attending school at Presentation, Derek met Christa Hinckley of Gettysburg. They were married in 2016 and welcomed two sons, Kyson and Graham. These two boys were Derek’s whole life and focus. He looked forward to teaching them about everything life had to offer.
Derek worked for Hinckley Farms before starting as a manager for Ace Hardware in Gettysburg, where he was employed at the time of his death. When not working, you could always find Derek keeping busy. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, but would set any of these aside to watch some football. He was a man that valued family and would easily choose a day with his boys just hanging out, being goofy, or playing some good board games or cards. Derek was also an avid reader.
Life here on earth without Derek will be a little dimmer without the smile and love he had for everyone. He will be remembered for his easy-going attitude, goofy ways, and dry sense of humor.
Those left to cherish Derek’s life are his boys: Kyson and Graham of Gettysburg; parents: Greg and Tracy Buthe of Sioux Falls; sister, Jamie Buthe of Sioux Falls; mother to his boys, Christa Buthe, Gettysburg; aunts and uncles: Steve Bartling, Dallas, SD, Brad (Missy) Bartling, Mission, SD, Helen Olson, Fairmont, MN, Mary Jo (Steve) Nelson, Sioux Falls, Tim (Gerry) Buthe, Sargent Bluffs, IA, Lisa (Rick) Olson, Howard, and Tony (Barb) Buthe, New Prague, MN; dog, Freya; several cousins; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Ralph and Maxine Buthe and Lloyd and Ferne Bartling; and one uncle, Bill Olson.
An educational fund for Derek’s boys, Kyson and Graham, has been established at First Interstate Bank, 111 N. East St., Gettysburg, SD.
Derek’s family would like to thank the community of Gettysburg for their love and support.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg (www.familyfuneralhome.net) and Miller Funeral Home of Sioux Falls have been entrusted with Derek’s arrangements.
