Dorothy M. Ondricek, 96, of Highmore, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Highmore Health.
Dorothy Mae Hemphill was born on December 23, 1925, in St Paul, Minnesota to James and Hattie (Gehweir) Hemphill. Dorothy moved with her parents to Deer River, Minnesota in 1933. She attended grade school in Ball Club, Minnesota and high school in Deer River, Minnesota, graduating in 1944. She always wanted to be a teacher, she came to South Dakota where she had many relatives and attended Northern in Aberdeen one summer and taught school in Hyde County where she met her husband, Tony Ondricek. They were married on May 4, 1946 and took up farming at their home place. They had five daughters: Myrna, Joy, Norma, Tonita, and Dawn. In 1967, due to Tony’s health, they moved to Highmore, where he lived for only one week. Dorothy moved into the manor in 1980.
She liked to work in the flower beds, read, crochet, and do puzzles. She liked to go to auctions, she collected bears and pencil sharpeners. She was a member of the Senior Center and Highmore Health Care Auxiliary as an active volunteer. She accepted the Lord as her Saviour at an early age and was baptized in 1967. She became a Member of the Church of Christ in 1998. She had Bible Study in her home.
Survivors include her daughters: Norma (Vern) Erickson Sioux Falls, Tonita (Ward) Hamlin Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dawn Jaqua of Sioux Falls; brother, Clyde Hemphill; sister, Audrey Arko; seven grandchildren: Tony (Pam) Ondricek, Dory (Mindy) Erickson, Tonya (Thomas) Rhein, Nicole Hamlin, Matthew (Nikki) Jaqua, Mindy (Bryan) Scheel, and Magen Jaqua; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tony; daughters Myrna Rae and Joy; brothers: Donald, Lester, Albert, and James; and sisters: Lucille and Marie.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Dorothy’s arrangements.
