Mass of Christian Burial for Eddie Berens, 90 of Selby will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Selby. Burial will be at Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A rosary will begin at 10:00 AM Wednesday. Eddie passed away Friday, October 23, 2020, at the Walworth County Care Center.
Eddie was born August 21, 1930 in rural Selby to Joseph and Elsie (Allmendinger) Berens. He grew up and began working at a young age on his parent’s farm and attended country school through the 8th grade.
On January 7, 1953 Eddie married Pauline Aberle at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mobridge. Eddie and Pauline then began their own farming and livestock operation in rural Selby. For several years they raised cattle and had a feedlot along with raising many hogs and finishing them out. Farming was Eddie’s life, he was a good steward of the land as he spent his entire life as a grain farmer. In 1970 he was the first one in the area to plant sunflowers. Eddie also sold Trojan and Dekalb seed for many years.
Eddie was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, also serving as their Governor for many years. He was a member of Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Selby, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1964, Eddie was selected and honored as one of America’s Four Young Farmers Award.
He loved to work and also enjoyed Bowling and Duck hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline of Selby, sons and daughters, Ron (Pat) Berens of North Carolina, Sylvia (Tom) Miklos of Selby, Mary (Kevin) Holgard of Glenham, Jean (Bob) Silva of Folsom, California, Mark (Linda) Berens of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jason (Laurel) Berens of Selby and Marlin (Jess) Berens of Glenham. Also 20 Grandchildren, 28 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Allen Berens, one brother, Leo Berens and one sister, Ann Pearson.
