PIERRE, SD – Edgar “Ed” Hemmelman, 94, of Pierre died on Sunday, October 26 at Avera Maryhouse in Pierre. Per Ed’s wishes there will be a private graveside memorial service at a later date in Wessington Springs.
Ed was born on September 15th, 1931 in Wessington Springs, SD to Hollister and Jane (Powell) Hemmelman. He grew up and attended school in Wessington Springs graduating in 1949.
After graduation he enlisted in United States Army and enlisted as a Marine in 1952. He was very proud of his military service and carried it with him for the rest of his life staying very active in the local military organizations. After his military service he moved home and married Marlene Ring on June 3, 1956 in Wessington Springs. Marlene passed away on March 6, 2008, Ed married Nancy Feeney on February 14, 2012 in Ft. Pierre.
When he completed his military service he carried his passion of serving others and his community by becoming a South Dakota State Highway Patrolman serving for over 24 years. During his time as a highway patrolman, he was stationed in Flandreau and Chamberlain before settling in Pierre in 1973. During his time in the highway patrol, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant before retiring in 2000.
Ed was active in the American Legion Post 8 serving as past commander, VFW Post 2038, South Dakota Highway Patrol Retiree’s Association, the First United Methodist Church and last but not least a very proud member of the United States Marine Corps League. (Semper Fi) He played “Taps” at funerals for many fellow veterans when requested by families.
He is survived by his sons Michael of Reno, NV; Mark of Rapid City; Keith (Barb) of Pierre; Brian of LaPorte, MN; Scott (Shawna) of Kalispell, MT, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Margaret, Gwen, Phyllis, Helen and brother Donald.
