Edna was born on July 28th, 1923, to Henry and Martha (Dittert) Schmitgen on their farm in East Sully County. She attended South Buffalo School until the 8th grade when she then needed to stay home and raise her siblings after losing her parents at a young age. Saturday evenings were spent in Onida where she met the love of her life, Stanley Foth. Edna and Stanley married on December 31, 1950.
Edna was a homemaker and loved caring for her family and helping on the farm. She could always be found cooking and baking for her family and friends. Edna enjoyed gardening and tending to her many flowers, and she loved mowing her yard. In fact, Edna could be seen riding her mower even into her 90’s. Edna was a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church in Onida where she taught Sunday school, Happy Club and was involved in the ladies groups.
In her later years, Edna enjoyed coming to Onida to attend her grandchildren’s sporting events and the Sully County Fair. She also enjoyed flying with her son and was the most entertaining co-pilot. No matter the occasion, Edna always had a great attitude and loved laughing with others. Her infectious smile will be missed by all who knew her.
Grateful for having shared Edna’s life are her three children: Steve (Judy) Foth of Onida, Sharon (Dellis) Birkey of Wichita, KS, and Scott (Amber) Foth of Onida; eight grandchildren: Caris, Lynn, Max, Tanner, Mitchell, Kenny, Ashley and Erin; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister Ethel Rittel of Highmore, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley in June of 1993; one grandson, Jayd; brothers John, Joseph, Theodore, Alford, Lewis and Elvin; sisters Frances and Clara.
