Effie Martha (Melvin) Hunsley was born to Dan and Bertha (Sanders) Melvin on November 25, 1919 in Highmore, SD. Effie passed away, surrounded by family, on March 26, 2022 at Avantara in Pierre, SD.
Visitation will be Friday, April 1 from 1-2 @ Feigum Funeral Home followed by a memorial service and burial at Riverside Cemetery.
Effie attended schools in Highmore, Rousseau and Pierre graduating from Pierre High School in 1937.
On May2, 1937 she married Warren Hunsley and they made their home in rural Hughes County where they ranched and raised Hereford cattle. Effie was an active 4-H leader in the 1950’s. She began her working career in 1954 in the SD Dept. of Revenue where she was employed for over 30 years.
In the mid 80’s Effie and Warren sold the ranch and moved to a home on River road in Pierre where Effie resided until 2020. Effie was a superb cook, she loved to entertain, she collected antiques and elephants and loved to dance. The Hunsley’s hosted many barn dances thru the years.
Effie is survived by her son Roger (Carole) Hunsley of Louisville, KY, grandson Brad (Stacey) Hunsley of LaVista, NE and two granddaughters, Jackie (Jeff) Rondini of Chicago, IL and Anne Nikkel of South Carolina, four great grandchildren, Braxton, Sydney, Rylee and Molly, sister Joyce Norman of Kennewick, WA and several generations of nieces and nephews.
Effie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Warren, sisters Zora Thompson, Jessie Whitney, Madeline Fratzke, Dorothy Hewlett, Mary Gabert, Donna Betsinger, brothers Wilbur Melvin and Warren Melvin along with an infant brother (Daniel) and sister (Margaret).
