Eileen Clara Meyer, daughter of Emma (Tretter) and Nick J. Meyer, was born August 2, 1925 at her parent’s farm 6 miles south of Hoven. She attended rural school, St. Anthony’s Parochial School, and Hoven High School, graduating with the Class of 1943. She then attended the Aberdeen School of Commerce, where she received secretarial training. She worked as a secretary for the State of South Dakota, first in Pierre at the office of Gov. M.Q. Sharpe and then as clerk at the Appropriations Committee for one session. She then moved to Aberdeen where she concluded her secretarial vocation at the Office of the President of Northern State College, N.E. Steele. Eileen married Edwin R. Beitelspacher (best known as Spike) on June 29, 1949 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Eileen’s uncle, Monsignor Peter P. Meyer, acting as celebrant. They lived on Spike’s home farm SE of Lowry until 1961 when they relocated to Eileen’s home place south of Hoven. In 1997 they moved into Hoven. Spike died June 15, 2000 and Eileen continued living in Hoven where she was active in her community and Church. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Koinonia, weekly prayer and Rosary group, and St. Anthony’s Altar Society. She was also a 73-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Although she enjoyed gardening, yard work, embroidering, and playing cards, spending time with her family came first with Eileen. She touched the hearts of those she came in contact with and will be remembered and missed by many.
Eileen is survived by five daughters, Clara (Ken) Eilering of Albers, IL, Grace (Dave) VanWell of Hoven, Susan (Jim) Sanders of Belle Fourche, SD, Janice (Rick) Banghart of Gettysburg, SD, and Rita Miller of Olympia, WA; 16 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and son-in-law, Garry Lebert.
