PIERRE, SD – Ethel Marie (Bowman) Fry, died on Tuesday, August 13 in Pierre. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 17 at The Bridge Wesleyan Church in Pierre with a visitation prior to the service at 1:00pm and burial will take place at 10:00am Monday, August 19 at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre.
Ethel Marie (Bowman) Fry was born July 2, 1933 to George and Marie (Steiner) Bowman. She was the 6th of 8 children.
She was united in marriage to Marvin Fry on August 1, 1953. They began their married life in Richland, Missouri until Marvin finished his army duty in 1954. They made their home in Pierre. To this union 3 sons were born: Ken, Don and Larry.
Ethel was a member of the Grand Avenue Wesleyan church for over 35 years, was active in Sunday school and was known as the “craft lady” at Bible School and the Wesleyan Kids Camp in the Black Hills. She enjoyed being around people, helping at the nursing home, delivering meals on wheels, spending time with family and friends. She babysat for 15 years taking care of more than 65 children in those years.
She loved to play with her grandchildren and had her whole basement set up as every child’s dream play area, many fond memories were shared playing house, school, grocery store, restaurant and more!
Ethel also enjoyed crocheting, decorating cakes, playing cards and baking.
She is survived by her sons: Ken (Judy) Fry of Orange City, IA, Don Fry of Pierre and Larry (Jan) Fry of Pierre; her grandchildren: Chasidy (Steve) McCarty, Kristine Fry, Heather (Travis) Sickler, Janelle Van Riesen and Sarah Fry; 13 great grandchildren; one brother Phillip Bowman; several nieces, nephews and cousins and her best friend of over 70 years Irene Sautter.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin; her parents and siblings Charles, John, George, Robert, Rose and Edna; numerous aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins and friends.
