Everett “Tator” was born on December 30, 1967, at Fort Yates, N.D. to Rose Fool Bear. He was raised in Cannonball and attended Cannonball Elementary School and Solen High School.
Tator came into the Pat and Patti Kelly family as a young boy. At approximately 10 years of age Tator began to work for Pat at Kelly’s bar in Cannonball. Tator and Pat spent countless hours together working and “eating on the road”. In time, Tator affectionately referred to his adopted father and mother, Pat Kelly, as “Pa”and Patti Kelly as “Ma”. When Tator became a young man, like his “Pa”, he chose to become a Police Officer. Pat then became a Mentor to Tator in the profession of Law Enforcement. Tator learned the skills of “Community Policing” before the term was coined. Tator served the people of Standing Rock as a compassionate and caring Police Officer. Tator often said, “I became a Cop because of Pa. And being a Cop were the best years of my life.”
Tator was a talented musician and played the drums. He was the drummer for Bob Walker’s band the “Rising Sons” and would often fill-in as a drummer for other bands such as “Wyman and Company” and Butch Felix’s band “The Country Skins”. The late Lyman Viver taught Tator to plays the drums and he learned a lot about music from the very versatile musician and late Eugene Hairychin.
Tator also served the people in various other jobs. He worked as a Community Health Representative (CHR), He worked at the SRHS, Solen and Cannonball Schools in the Maintence Department and as a bus driver. The TWEP and the Elderly Nutrition Programs. Tator loved his job at Prairie Knights Casino in the Security Department, whereas on occasions he would escort VIPs performing at the casino.
Tator was an outgoing person, He loved Life and people. He enjoyed sports, especially softball, volleyball, and foosball. His zeal for life was revealed in his laughter and how he joked and teased all around him. While we are sad because he left us in the physical world to be with the Lord, Tator will live on in all of us through our memories, stories and how he affected our lives. We Love You Tator, we shall miss you everyday and learn to live with your absence until we see you again.
