Funeral services for Francis James Andera Jr. “Jim”, 82, of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2023 at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain, SD. Visitation with family present will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain.
In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in Jim’s name.
Francis James Andera Jr. (Jim) was born March 26, 1941 at the homeplace in Ola Township to Francis James Andera Sr. and Florence Mae Svenson. He was raised in Ola Township on the family farm.
He attended Pretzer Country School through eighth grade. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball, SD.
Following school, he worked on the family farm. September 24, 1960, he married Sandra Marlene Haugen in Lake Benton, MN at the judge’s home. To this union four children were born. Michael, Kay, David, and Shelly. He worked various farming jobs until he started farming on his own in Red Lake Township creating Lazy JY Bar Farm. Harvesting and calving times were his favorites.
On December 26, 1994 he was united in marriage to Karen Gayle Wint. He also gained a daughter and adopted Kara. They made their home in Pukwana where they lived for 17 years. They then moved to the Chamberlain Township where he spent his remaining years.
Jim served as a crop adjuster for Speckel’s Insurance and served on the Brule County Weed Board for 7 years and in 2015 was honored as a Century Farmer. He belonged to the St. James Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the board of the Chamberlain Township. His life was spent plowing the earth, planting it, reaping it, and raising cattle.
Jim loved to travel which included: the Caribbean, Hawaii and his favorite was Alaska. He loved to hunt and fish. He was always part of the community and loved socializing at the Co-op playing cards and sipping coffee. In his later years, he enjoyed the Chamberlain Senior Center.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Florence, and Francis Andera Sr., daughter Shelly Salisbury, sister-in-law LaRea Andera and nephew Christopher Andera.
Jim passed away on July 24, 2023. He is survived by his wife Karen Andera, children Michael Andera (Mary), Kay Eden (Mark), David Andera (Andrea), and Kara Fenner (Keith), brothers Robert Andera (Sheryl), Edward Andera, Frank Andera (Mary Jo) and Timothy Andera (Lora), 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and #15 will be here soon.
