PIERRE, SD – Frank Iversen was born on May 3, 1933, to Chris and Ruth Iversen, the second of 10 children in their family.
He grew up in Pierre until age 11, when he moved to the family ranch on Bad River to work alongside his father and brothers.
At 21, Frank joined the Army and served as an airplane mechanic, with his final post at Fort Monroe in Virginia. After his service, he returned home to South Dakota.
As a young man he enjoyed playing baseball with the Wendte Ball Team and racing the #25 car with his brother Dudley. He did a short stint as a cab driver and knew the streets of Pierre like the back of his hand.
The most important thing he found when moving back to Wendte was that a new gal had moved into town and her name was Pat. They were married on November 4, 1964. Together with Pat’s 3 children Jerry, Sammy and Sherrie they started a family. Not long after, Dana was born, followed by Diane and then Dawn. Frank and Pat shared 56 years of marriage.
Over the years, Frank ran several types of cattle and steadily grew the family ranch. He especially loved haying season, often working from sunrise to dark. Frank also served two terms as a Stanley County Commissioner and took pride in giving back to the community. In his downtime, he enjoyed playing cards, betting against the Vikings with Russ, listening to the radio over a cup of coffee, and telling stories from the old days. Frank semi-retired from ranching in his late 80’s and fully retired from his work on April 28, 2025, at his home in Pierre.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Pat, his stepchildren Jerry and Sherrie, and twelve siblings. He is survived by his children Dana (Annis), Diane, and Dawn; his stepson Sammy (Diane); his closest grandchildren Justin, Soren, Sierra, Megan, and Abby; and many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Grace (Russ), Janet, and Judy (Art), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
