GERING, NE – Gary “Tump” Lee Premus, age 84, of Gering, Nebraska passed away on Thursday, September 26th, 2024.
A visitation will be at 1:00pm on Friday, October 4th, 2024 at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre, SD. A gravesite service will be 2:00 pm CST Scotty Philip Cemetery followed by luncheon at Lilly Park, Fort Pierre, SD.
Gary “Tump” was born on August 14, 1940, in Clark, SD. He lived in Clark until 1951 and played Little League Baseball as a pitcher and Terry, his brother, played third base. He moved to Watertown in 1951. In the summer of ’52 played baseball at Watertown, Terry played the 3rd Base on the State Championship team and Gary “Tump” was the batboy. He moved to Fort Pierre in October of ’52 and moved to Jamie Putman’s house that was in the flood district on fairground road. His stepfather Pete Widboom rebuilt the house that we lived in. In 1953 he went with Bobby Tiermen on the racehorse track during the summertime all over South Dakota. In 1954 he started working for Corey Clark southeast of Fort Pierre. He then went to Lloyd Hannum Ranch and stayed with them until 1961. Then he went to Duane Hannum ranch in 1962.
Gary “Tump” Premus met the love of his life Jean Nadine Dicus, and they were married on November 16, 1963. We then moved to Cheyenne River and worked for PC Hamilton Ranch. In 1965 we then moved to Roy Roseth Ranch. Jeannell was born in 1966, Katherine was born in 1967, James was born in 1970, & Lance was born in 1979. We began purchasing the ranch on Antelope Creek in 1974. We moved to the Ranch in 1976 so James could go to first grade at Stanley County school in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. Jeannell graduated in ’85, Katherine graduated in ’87, James graduated in ’89 from Stanley County school. Then we moved off the ranch in April of ’89.
Fall of 1989 we moved to a house east of Minatare, NE so Lance could go to Community Christian School in Scottsbluff, NE. We moved to a house on West Overland in 1990. Lance graduated from Oral Roberts University in 2003.
Gary “Tump” enjoyed living on the ranch owning cattle and working as a ranch hand for many years. The beef industry was the love of Gary’s “Tump” life, and he could tell you everything from cattle markets to proper care of all livestock. Gary “Tump” loved horses and had many on the ranch.
He was a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren more than anything else. He loved going to and watching Major League baseball games, he could tell you about every team & player.
Gary “Tump” always loved to talk to people and share the word of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.
Gary’s “Tump” personal relationship with Jesus Christ his Lord & Savior was most important to him through praying and studying God’s word.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Nadine (Dicus) Premus; his father, Marvin Cy Premus; his stepfather, Pete Widboom; his mother, Berdean Widboom, his brother, Wally Widboom and his grandson Hadly McCormick.
He is survived by his daughter, Jeannell (Dan) Scott and his grandson, Joseph and granddaughter, Dadra (Gavin) Saxton; his daughter, Katherine (Cameron) McCormick and his grandson, Hagen McCormick and his great-grandchildren, Alaina and Cian; his son, James (Belinda) Premus and his grandchildren, Jacob and Denton; his son, Lance (Katie) Premus and his brother, Terry (Robin) Premus and family.
