Charles Eugene “Gene” Warriner of Blunt SD passed away on April 11, 2022 at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, Pierre.
Gene was born October 1, 1931 in Onida, South Dakota. He was the second child born to Paul R. and Edith May (Romine) Warriner. He graduated from Blunt High School in 1949.
He was drafted into the US Army in November of 1952 and attended basic training and advanced infantry training in Fort Knox and saw that the war was still active so thought he would try for Officer Candidate School, took a test and was accepted. Two weeks into OCS he contracted pneumonia and wasn’t able to complete it. He received an MOS to be in the 92nd Infantry Searchlight Operation where he started as a searchlight operator and was later asked if he would be interested in cooking for the group of 19 men. He worked with what they gave them and even made a pumpkin-tasting pie out of green beans. He received the Korean, United Nations, National Defense and Good Conduct Medals for his service. He was discharged in November 1954.
After he returned home, he started working for the SD Department of Motor Vehicles. Not long after praying to God to bring him a wife, Gene spotted the love of his life walking up the aisle at the movie theatre. He told his buddies he was going to marry that woman and in February of 1956, he married Joan (pronounced JO-ann) Johnson at Egeland Lutheran Church in rural Waubay, SD. They started their family in a small trailer house before building their home west of Blunt. Gene went into farming and ranching with his dad, Paul and brother-in-law, George Sperry. They raised Angus cattle and corn, supplying much to West River ranchers. Later on, Gene went out on his own and focused on farming and, for a short time, raised pigs and chickens for the kids. Gene worked tirelessly to create a successful farming operation for his family. Along with farming mainly wheat, corn, sunflowers, and soybeans, Gene was on the Oahe Electric Board of Directors, a founding member of the Mid Dakota Rural Water Board of Directors and active at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blunt as an elder and various other roles. In the 70s Gene sold Jacques seed and since he and Joan liked to travel in the winter, they were able to go on many trips with family and friends all around the United States and Mexico.
Gene is survived by Joan his wife of 66 years, son Paul Warriner and daughters Pam Warriner and Lori (Sean) Billet, grandchildren Jana Warriner, Ryan (Jenny Johnson) Warriner and Tara Warriner, Kelsey (Aaron) Trimble and Kory (Lauren) Wilson, great grandchildren Taylor, Addison and Colt Warriner, Grace Casey and Oakden Eugene Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Phyllis and Carol and an infant brother.
