Mass of Christian Burial for Gilbert Marshall, 80, of Eagle Butte will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, January 10, 2025, at All-Saint’s Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. Burial will be in the Eagle Butte Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the Lower Brule Community Center with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 PM that evening. Gilbert passed away Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Sanford Medical Center in Chamberlain.
Gilbert (Gib) Louis Marshall was born August 29, 1944, at Cheyenne Agency, the 6th of 13 children born to Irving and Ruby G. Marshall and passed away with his wife Marlys and daughter Marla at his bedside on January 4th, 2025, at the Sanford Hospital in Chamberlain, SD.
He attended school at the Cheyenne River Agency and graduated in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1966 and served until 1968. He was deployed away from home for 18 months and was in Germany and France working as a truck driver. When he returned home from the Army in 1968, he married Nancy Silk in Fort Yates, ND and from this union two children were born; Marla and Grant. Gib worked for the Tribe in various positions: Beef Camp; Headstart; and NYC program.
In 1978, Gib was elected as a District 5 Council Representative and served four consecutive terms through 1994. After taking an eight-year break, he was once again elected as a District 5 Council Representative and served from 2002 through 2006. During his tenure as a Council Representative he served almost on every committee at one time or another as well as various boards and commissions.
At the time of his passing, Gib was splitting his time between Eagle Butte and Lower Brule with his wife Marlys. They were married in August 29, 2023.
Gib enjoyed ranching, traveling and visiting friends, going to the casino, attending his grandchildren’s ballgames, watching the girls dance at wacipi, reading books, drinking coffee, visiting with his siblings and driving around with his brother Tony, together they were our local Second Hand Lions.
He is survived by his wife Marlys Marshall; daughters Marla (Kevin) Keckler, Brenda (Roy) Lemmon; and Marlo Langdeau; and son Mike Ducheneaux. Grandchildren Lexi Keckler, Nolan (Bailey) Keckler, Dylan Lemmon, Christopher Lemmon, Julie Lemmon, Madison Langdeau, Maci Langdeau, Chloe Langdeau, and Cambree Langdeau. Great grandchildren Suni Bowman, Rowie Bowman, and Grant Keckler. Siblings: Frances Gray, Lloyd Marshall, Tom Marshall, Tony Marshall, Mary Marshall, Nita Pearman, and Tudee Rousseau.
He is preceded in death by his parents Irving and Ruby G. Marshall, his son Grant Marshall, and siblings Opal Heisler, Beaux Marshall, Allen “Spider” Marshall, Sandra Ward and numerous nieces and nephews.
